How We Built a Custom Product Configurator for a Made-to-Order Product
A made-to-order door cannot be described by one product photograph and a message box. For MB-Metal, we built a custom website and product configurator that captures the customer's choices and carries them into the team's internal work. This article explains the product lessons in that handoff, using the documented project rather than assuming a generic configurator architecture.
The product configuration problem
The specification includes custom dimensions, opening direction, fixed panels, dividers, colors, handles, glass, locking systems and thresholds. These are separate decisions that need to arrive together as one customer configuration. A useful starting point is to list what the team needs to review and price a door, then work backward to the inputs the customer must supply. We do not infer particular dependencies or dimensional limits from the published case study: those require confirmation from the product team.
Why a generic contact form was not enough
A free-text inquiry leaves the customer to remember every relevant detail and the team to interpret it. Structured inputs give dimensions and option selections their own place in the request. The lesson is to separate product specification from the customer's additional questions. This is a design rationale, not a claim that every inquiry was previously incomplete or that we measured a reduction in follow-up messages.
Designing the configuration flow
The documented flow lets customers define the door's dimensions and configuration options before submitting a structured request. For this kind of product, completeness matters as much as presentation: the output needs to retain the choices someone made, not just the fact that they clicked a contact button. Other teams can use the same principle by reviewing a sample specification with sales and production before deciding which inputs belong in the configurator. That recommendation does not imply an undocumented validation engine or particular technology stack in MB-Metal.
Connecting customer choices to an internal workflow
In MB-Metal, submission creates a structured request. The selected parameters support work in a custom admin panel, and the system generates a fully dimensioned technical plan for review, pricing and production preparation. The important product decision is that configuration has a useful internal output. It does not end at a visual preview. A technical plan supports the team's next steps; it should not be described as automatic production approval, live pricing or CAD integration, none of which is established by the available project content.
When visualization helps
The website includes an interactive 3D experience with scroll interaction. Visual presentation can help people understand a physical product, but that does not make 3D mandatory for configuration. A business whose difficult questions are dimensions and specification may benefit more from clear inputs and a technical drawing. Choose the visual approach for the decision it helps a customer make; keep the structured output useful independently of the presentation.
What other businesses can learn
Furniture, architectural products, industrial equipment and other made-to-order products can face a similar handoff between customer intent and internal specification. These are possible applications of the approach, not claims about our project history in those industries. Start with the output your team needs, capture explicit choices, and distinguish an inquiry from an approved order. Only then decide whether visualization, pricing rules or integrations are worth adding. A polished interface cannot replace an agreed specification.
When a custom configurator makes sense
- Customers need to specify dimensions or several meaningful product options.
- The team needs consistent configuration data to review or price a request.
- The chosen parameters should feed an internal specification or preparation step.
- A standard product page cannot capture the required information clearly.
